Character age: 35, he dies in 2014 for this rp.
What point in their timeline?: Four years after Light dies.

Abilities/powers: Uhm..he's got really good aim? Other than that he's kinda useless in this area, lol.
Personality: Matsuda is clumsy, very trusting, naive (almost to the point of ignorance), and funny. He's pretty much the 'clown' of the group. His innocence and lack of experience have hindered the group sometimes and been a source of entertainment and/or annoyance at others. He has an inferiority complex and, due to this, he sometimes will act out with less thinking and attempt to do something to prove his worth. Though, often, this leads to mistakes and feeling even more worthless as then everyone is yelling at him because he messed everything up. He always tries to do well, but it can often backfire. He has a good heart, though, and always tries to think the best of people. He believed in Light all the way through. He never gave his innocence a second thought until that fated day in the Yellow Box Warehouse once Light finally confessed. And, even after Matsuda shot him and tried to kill him, he felt pained at seeing Light beg for his life. He still felt like Light didn't deserve such a cruel ending. And, even a whole year afterwards, he still speaks in Light's defense in a roundabout way, because he was (I quote) 'fond of Light.'

History: (For the first part of this history, I will use the history I use for Light apps, as it is nice and detailed and tells everything about the Death Note plot. After that, I will write some blurbs on the focal parts of Matsuda's involvement, as well as the happenings after Light's death)

Yagami Light was a serious college-bound student who felt this world was rotting beyond repair. Every day he would here that so-and-so had murdered this woman, or so-and-so had escaped and raped this person.
He was growing sick of it all. There needed to be justice! Fear needed to be instilled in these people. Fear that would cause them to never yearn to hurt others again.
And then..he found himself in possession of a weapon that was the perfect way to accomplish just this...A notebook of death.
Dropped into the human world by a shinigami named Ryuk, the death note could kill anyone who's name was written into it within 40 seconds, of a heart attack. If a heart attack was not preferred, the cause of death could be changed to anything you chose as long as it was plausible and the details of such death was written within 6 minutes and 40 seconds of writing the new cause of death.
The original shinigami owner of the notebook had to follow the human around as long as he/she owned it. So, Light found himself with a deadly weapon in his possession and a death god following him around everywhere.
The Japanese police were asked by a faceless genius only known as 'L' to help him with the investigation into the 'Kira' case. The bad part about this was that Yagami Light's father was the superintendent of the NPA. Light would simply have to hack into his father's computer to gain any information on the case that he wanted, and then cover his tracks. Though, through this, L eventually figured out Kira had to be among one of the families of the people working on the investigation. He had several FBI agents secretly follow them and see if Kira could be found out.
Light was smarter than this, though, and found out the name of the man following him, Ray Penbar. He then had him, as well as all the other FBI agents in Japan, killed, by Ray Penbar's own hand, nonetheless.
Ray Penbar's fiance, though, could tell that the death of the drug addict used to figure out Ray's name had to be more than coincidence. She began to investigate into the case herself, which only led to Light talking her into letting him know her name as well and killing her off before she could get the information she planned to tell the NPA to those she needed to get it to.
L let the people who were left working on the Kira case see his true face, but kept his name hidden, only to be known as Ryuzaki. The small handful of people began using all their skills to attempt to find Kira.
L told Light's father about the high possibility of Kira being a member of his family, and got hidden cameras placed everywhere in their home. Light could tell someone had gone into his room, though, and was ahead of their steps. He acted like he was a normal student in front of the cameras, hiding a small LCD TV in a bag of potato chips and still passing judgement as he pretended to study. He went unnoticed for this time, and the cameras were taken out.
L felt that, even so, Light had a possibility of being Kira, and stalked him to his college. Light was accepted, as well as L, with perfect scores on both of their exams. Light pretended to be L's friend and vice-versa, both very suspicious of the other.
Eventually, Light was asked to help on the case, and a second Kira introduced themselves. This was Misa, a model who wanted to help Kira best she could, and had gotten a death note from a shinigami named Rem. She found out Light was Kira and asked him to be her boyfriend in exchange for help from her shinigami eyes. She would find out the names of people and tell him, so he could rid himself of the annoyance of L.
Light came up with a plan, once Misa was arrested for suspicion of being the second Kira, and had himself put into custody so they could watch him. The deaths stopped, obviously, and suspicion grew, but he had Ryuk take the notebook and discard it, having Light lose all memory of having had it in his possession. Rem then took the notebook to a man who obviously would use it for his own means, and the deaths began again. L eventually let Light and Misa out of custody. They began to investigate into the new deaths, with Light's help. L kept Light and Misa under 24-hour surveillance and they all worked on the case together, Light acting in L's place.
Once they found out who it was, they concocted a plan to catch him, and did, but got ahold of the notebook in the process. All of those in the NPA saw Rem and Light gained back his memories. Misa's memories had been restored earlier.
Misa's life was threatened by L and so, the Shinigami Rem sacrificed her life to make Misa's longer by killing off Watari and L. L died in Light's arms, seeing who he was and knew he was Kira right before he died. Light covered it up by having everyone search for Rem, finding the notebook himself and keeping it. They put Light in charge, fooled by his guise, and this went on for several years as Kira continued judgement.
A New 'L' was put on the case though. Well..more like two. Near and Mello. Mello doing his own investigation with help from the mafia and Near doing an official one with help from police.
Mello kidnapped Light's sister and had his father trade out the notebook in their possession to Mello. They sent it off to a deserted area, but Light and crew found him and Light's father made the deal for the shinigami eyes to gain the notebook back and use it to kill Mello. He didn't kill him, though, and died instead.
Light was found out by Near, and Near merely had to get proof. Light had a loyal follower named Mikami put in charge of the notebook. He also had an old girlfriend from college who was a loyal follower of his as well put in charge of being spokesperson for him after the death of his other spokesperson. She was the go-between for he and Mikami and they spoke through writing to avoid being caught by bugs.
She was kidnapped by Mello, though, and she used the deathnote pages given to her to kill him and then told Mikami to continue judgment. Light killed her...well..he thought.. and went on to meet Near at a specified time and place. This was calculated in Light's head and Near had merely altered a fake notebook. What he didn't know, however, was that Mikami had continued judgment with the real notebook and Giovanni saw this. The whole notebook was replaced in one night, right before their meeting, and Light was then proven to be Kira. He was shot by Matsuda and Ryuk eventually killed him with his own death note.

Now for Matsuda-ness!

His history is pretty much the majority of what I wrote in Light's background. The only difference is that, for the earlier part of the series he was not around Light, but with the Task Force. He was the newbie who was just beginning to get a feel for it when the Kira case began. He readily worked on the case once presented, though he would occasionally show signs of being unsure which side was thoroughly right from the very beginning, even before the task force broke up.

The Task Force was asked by L to help him with the investigation. After the FBI agents died, most of the Task Force did not trust L any longer, and many of them quit. Matsuda was one of the people who remained. L decided to meet with them. Thus starting their cooperation with the famous detective.

He took the alias Taro Matsui while working with L, and also became Misa Amane's manager once she and Light joined. Despite working to capture Kira, which he knew must be done, Matsuda admitted that a part of him recognized the good Kira was doing, even if he knew it was the wrong way to go about it. As such, he was somewhat supportive and sympathetic towards Kira's followers, though he didn't let it get in the way of his work.

During the Yotsuba arc, Matsuda got sick of always being just an errand boy and getting yelled at so much. Due to this, he ran off to Yotsuba’s headquarters and snuck around to try and get any info involving Kira. This lead to him being caught and put into a life/death situation in which he had to fake his death to get out of. Misa arranged a party with several of her friends and the Yotsuba members and Matsuda pretended he was drunk, balancing on a ledge and intentionally falling off. He landed on a mattress a few stories below and was pulled in quickly while a stunt double was placed on the ground to look like the fallen Matsuda. L and Light acted like the ambulance doctors and got the stunt double out of there. Matsuda was cleared.

Later on, they plan to catch Higuchi (the Kira during the Yotsuba arc) by having Matsuda appear on TV to proclaim he knows who Kira is. This got Higuchi to panic and start trying to kill him. But, since Higuchi only knew an alias, he wasn’t able to kill him and was caught after arriving at Sakura TV in his attempt to view Matsuda with the shinigami eyes.

Due to ‘Matsui Tota’ being ‘dead’, Mogi was made Misa’s new manager.

Matsuda’s next big part was Light’s death scene, of course. He defended Light all the way to the end, and he even got back up after having shot Light and felt sympathy for him when Light was begging Ryuk for his life. He looked truly pained at seeing Light in such a way, and one of the other task members had to hold him back from walking over to Light then.

In the epilogue, Matsuda comments on how the crime rate has gone back to the way it was before Kira ever came to be, as if Kira never even existed. It’s pretty much regrettably, and he even goes into a long explanation of just how he thinks Near planned everything that was to happen at the warehouse and afterwards. Ide dismisses it and this conversation ensues:
Ide: Matsuda, you’re thinking about this too much. Actually…That’s not even speculation.
Matsuda: Not speculation?
Ide: It’s your wish.
Matsuda: Wish?
Ide: That’s right, a wish.
Matsuda: …
Ide: Light may have been Kira…but you were fond of Light, weren’t you?
Matsuda:…! (looks away with an expression much like a combination of sadness and shame)..My wish...Maybe you’re right.
Ide: As I said before, I’ve got no doubt that we did the right thing.
Matsuda: How can you be so sure about it, Ide?
Ide:…
Matsuda: I’m sorry. I know that it’s completely twisted of me to compare the Kira society to current society, but…
Ide: No, I personally don’t think you’re twisted at all, and I can’t clearly say that Near is righteous. The only reason I say that we did the right thing is because if Near had lost there…we’d all be dead right now. That’s all.
Matsuda: If you put it that way… (small nervous smile) I guess you’re right.
After this, we find that Matsuda is not the newest guy in the force anymore and he seems to tease the newcomer, Yamamoto, a lot. Matsuda is somewhat moving up a bit.

3 years after Light's death, a new 'Kira' appeared, known as C-Kira (Cheap-Kira). Matsuda was involved with the case but did little in it, as Near (currently L at the time), told C-Kira through public airwaves that he was nothing like the original Kira and was simply an abominable murderer and the man killed himself three days later.

Not canonly, the history of this Matsuda ends during a chase scene in a warehouse. The Task Force had tracked down a murderer and was choosing this time to catch him and arrest him for the killings he'd done. Matsuda ended up cornering him alone, and was about to shoot him, but the man was quicker. Matsuda was shot in the head, causing him to fall to the ground, dying soon after. The man got away, and the case was put on hold due to the Task Force's loss.


Sample journal entry:
You know those times when you feel lost but you're not really lost and all you can think of is 'why do I feel so lost if I'm not lost?' Then..you start looking around for anything that may indicate why you feel like that...but there's nothing there? Then you get frustrated because you don't know what's making you feel like this?

Yeah..that's how I feel right now…

Though…it’s strange. Even when feeling so lost, I have yet to stumble or trip or anything today…It’s as if when my mind is lost, my body is fully functional with no problems. It’s like it’s gone on auto-pilot or something. Anyone else know how this is?

He breathed his last, going completely and utterly still.
This world is so cruel...
